How to Write A  Great Best Man Speech 

Congratulations, you’ve been chosen to be the best man at your friend’s wedding.   

Now what? 

Are you stressed out thinking about how to prepare a speech?

You probably have no idea where to start. You’re not alone. You are not the first and definitely won’t be the last best man to have anxiety about preparing a best man speech.

No need to worry, we’ll get you through this with a few simple tips on how to write a best man speech you and everyone else can be proud of. Just follow along and you'll be there in no time.

1. Decide what you want people to know about the bride and groom.  Do you want to relay a story of how you first met the bride or a story about their relationship that shows how in love they truly are or maybe how they met?  Make sure that you only choose a positive story! 

2. Make sure you thank the hosts of the wedding whether it is the bride’s parents or someone else. A lot of work goes into planning and executing a wedding so make sure you thank the appropriate people for all of their hard work. 

3. Choose a personal story about the groom that conveys your relationship with him. If you can try to choose a funny story since those usually go over really well.  Don’t choose a story that reflects poorly on the bride in any way. Don’t talk about the groom’s previous relationships or ex’s no matter how funny the story is.

4. Don’t be afraid to let your emotions show (I know, you’re a guy and we don’t do that). Put your personality into it.

5. Don’t forget to introduce yourself since not everyone will know who you are or what your relationship is with the groom. Many guests may not even know either the bride or the groom so they surely won’t know who you are.  Setting the stage by explaining your relationship with bride and groom warms you up to the crowd.

6. In order to not bore the audience, keep your speech brief.  If you go over 10 minutes you’ve gone to long.  Most guests have a short attention span and want to get on with festivities of eating, drinking and dancing. A short speech will accomplish two things. It’ll get you through it faster and relieve your anxiety and it will get the guests on to the party faster.

7. Make sure you write out your speech and practice it. Try to give in front of others if you can.

8. Finally, do not forget to give a toast at the end of your speech.
